It happened on 15 December 2016 at the World Pie Eating Championships 2016 in Wigan, England. The competition is simply to see who can eat more pie in a few minutes, a kind of 'King of the Big Gulps' competition.

This competition, which started in 1992, is held from time to time and is now in its 14th year. The rules have been changed several times: a 3-minute time limit (to see who can eat more pies), a 30-minute time limit, and a time trial (to see who can eat a pie in the shortest time). The current 'world records' are the fastest pie time of 22.53 seconds, 7 pies in 3 minutes, and 11 pies in 30 minutes.

A strange question was raised by one of the competition organizers, would the pie taste more enjoyable if it was pre-treated? The general idea of treating it would be to chill it in the fridge or bake it first. But a group of space enthusiasts heard about this and came up with a very creative idea: send the pie into the atmosphere! How?

They came up with a plan after much deliberation: they used a weather balloon to take the potato pie 30 kilometers up into the air, where it was already at the edge of the atmosphere. Guided by GPS, the potato pie was successfully recovered after its journey into space and the experiment was a resounding success.

The whole experiment took about two hours and the balloon (and pie) reached an altitude of 29 miles (46 km); the landing site was 38 miles (61 km) away from the start of the launch.

Potatoes are rich in starch and are one of the most popular foods for children and adults alike. There are many different ways to eat potatoes and you can make them for your family. Today you'll learn how to make a chicken and potato pie for the weekend that is both nutritious and delicious.
