Leaf peeping is a popular recreational activity in the United States, where people go in search of autumn leaves during the golden season.

As autumn approaches, the leaves change from green to yellow, showing the most beautiful colors. Hiking is a favorite activity for many people during this time.

The Roaring Fork Valley in Colorado has hundreds of hiking trails for fall foliage viewing. Here are five of the most scenic and popular trails for leaf peeping:

East of Aspen: This trail is perfect for those who want an easy stroll around town. The peaks of Independence Pass and the valley walls surrounded by yellow and green leaves make for a picturesque view. The trail is approximately 1 mile long and parallels Highway 82.

Hunter Creek Valley: This trail is known for its beautiful yellows, oranges, and reds of autumn leaves. There are two ways to access this trail, one that is more time-consuming and difficult, and one that is easier and quicker.

The second option is to take a shuttle bus to the Upper Hunter Creek Trailhead. The valley is also home to old mining lodges and beaver dams, adding to the beauty of the area.

American Lake: This trail takes you to one of the classic lake views in the Castle Creek Valley. The trail is 3 miles uphill at 2,000 feet and is surrounded by dense, beautiful aspen trees that look like a sea of gold.

The trail also leads through coniferous forests and gravel roads, leading to the stunning alpine landscape of American Lake.

Sunnyside Trail: This trail is named for its sunny location, which can shine until late afternoon. It also has one of the largest stands of aspen trees in the valley. The trail is popular with hikers and mountain bikers in the fall for its bright yellow forest landscape.

Capitol Peak: This trail is one of the most scenic hikes in the Roaring Fork Valley. The winding trail leads through a magnificent landscape of aspen groves, open meadows, and pine forests to the tranquil Capitol Lake at the base of Capitol Peak.

This is a popular route for longer trips and many overnight backpackers gather on this trail.

Golden autumn is a short season, so make sure to catch the tail end of it and treasure the limited-time beauty of autumn on sunny days! Remember to bring appropriate clothing for the hike and the weather.
