Roads and bridges, in general, consist of several major components such as roadbeds, road surfaces, bridges, tunnel works, and traffic engineering facilities.

Today, bridge architecture has become a fundamental part of the urban landscape and its significance has transcended its physical form to become a symbol of cultural and political progress.

In places like New York City, Paris, and London, some bridges have become destinations in their own right, attracting millions of tourists every year for photo ops. Here's a list of some of the world's most magnificent bridges for you to see if you get the chance.

1. Golden Gate Bridge

The iconic American Golden Gate Bridge was completed in May 1937, and its design was influenced by the Art Deco style, with the iconic colour known as "International Orange", and even when there is fog around the Bay Area, the bridge's structure stands out.

2. Double Helix Bridge

The Double Helix Bridge is one of the most popular landmarks in Singapore. The design of the bridge is based on the DNA structure and it is also a great place to enjoy the magnificent view of Singapore as it is designed with a special cantilevered viewing platform.

3. Brooklyn Bridge

Dating back to 1883, the Brooklyn Bridge connects the boroughs of Manhattan and Brooklyn, and its granite and limestone towers with gothic arches make it one of the most recognizable landmarks in the world.

4. London Bridge

The design of the London Tower Bridge was inspired by the neo-gothic architecture that was popular in England from the 18th to the early 20th century.

The architects chose this particular design because Queen Victoria opposed the construction of a modern building next to the Tower of London. After all, it would look out of place with the surrounding buildings.

5. Manhattan Bridge

The Manhattan Bridge is 2,089 meters long, with a magnificent Greek Revival entrance that leaves a lasting impression. The elaborate arches and colonnades were conceived by the architectural firm Carrere & Hastings, who drew their inspiration from classic European monuments.

6. Sydney Harbour Bridge, Sydney

This beautiful arched bridge spans Sydney Harbour, connecting the city to Sydney's North Shore, and was opened in 1932. Its iconic arch structure weighs 39,000 tons and stands 134 meters above sea level at the top, and its design was inspired by New York City's Hell Gate Bridge.

7. Bay Bridge

The Bay Bridge was born as a result of the gold rush that swept through the Bay Area in the 19th century, attracting a huge influx of people to San Francisco and Oakland, so there was an urgent need for a bridge to connect the two areas to facilitate the passage of people on both sides of the river.

It consists of three shorter bridges, two suspension bridges connecting downtown San Francisco and Yerba Buena Island, and a cantilever bridge that starts in Yerba Buena and ends in Oakland.

8. George Washington Bridge, New York, and New Jersey

Once the longest bridge in the world, the George Washington Bridge has a span of 1 kilometer and is a design conceived by Swiss engineer Othmar Ammann, which was called the most beautiful bridge in the world by the famous French architect Le Corbusier in 1947.
