The Moorish Idol is also known as the statue of the sea god. The shape of the Moorish Idol is very eye-catching, with a dorsal fin as high as a sickle, bright black, white and yellow colors, elegant swimming posture, revealing an extraordinary temperament.

Moorish Idol is a very special looking tropical reef fish. Rock reefs refer to the rocks near the water surface of rivers, lakes, and oceans, and rock-like objects formed by the remains of coral polyps. Generally, such places are paradise for fish.

The biggest feature of the Moorish Idol is their body shape. They are flat and thin, taller than long, with a very prominent mouth, a particularly long dorsal fin and a much extended front. The Moorish Idol is about 18 cm long and is pale yellow with 3 striking black vertical stripes. Due to its graceful shape and gorgeous body color, the Moorish Idol has become an enduring species of ornamental fish.

The juvenile Moorish Idol has a transparent body and a silver-white abdomen. The juveniles of the Moorish Idol first drifted in the open sea, and then transferred to the reefs when their bodies reached 40 mm. When the body length reaches 75 mm, the knife-shaped spines at the corners of the juveniles gradually disappear.

When mature, the Moorish Idol will have prominent horns on the forehead, so it is also called "horned scythe". Juveniles feed on plankton, and as adults they eat mainly invertebrates and algae. Moorish Idol are found in shallow waters of the Indian and Pacific Oceans.

Moorish Idol are usually found in small groups, occasionally in groups of hundreds. Their habitats vary widely, ranging from hard-bottomed turbid harbors and reef platforms to clean reef fringes up to 100 meters deep.

When confronted by an enemy or frightened, they quickly hide in caves or crevices in the reef. At night, the Moorish Idol will sleep on the bottom of the sea, and in order not to be disturbed by natural enemies, the body color will become dark.

If you want to keep Moorish Idol at home, it is suitable for raising in ecological aquariums with higher hardness water, and you can put some reefs in the water. It is best to control the hardness at 9-14°dH by changing the water and adding lime water, and keep the pH between 8.2-8.3.
