Hey, Lykkers! Have you ever dreamed of standing at the edge of a breathtaking canyon, surrounded by lush green landscapes and flowing rivers?

On our recent trip to Iceland, we had the chance to explore Fjaðrárgljúfur, and it turned out to be one of the highlights of our adventure.

A Journey Through the Canyon

As we approached Fjaðrárgljúfur, the first thing that struck us was the sheer scale of this magnificent canyon. Carved by glacial meltwater over thousands of years, it stretches approximately 2 kilometers and reaches depths of up to 120 meters. The vibrant green moss covering the canyon walls made it feel like we had stepped into a fairytale landscape.

The canyon is accessible year-round, and there’s no admission fee, making it a fantastic destination for travelers on any budget. We started our exploration by hiking along the well-marked paths that run along the canyon’s edge. The views were simply stunning! We couldn’t resist snapping countless photos as we took in the dramatic cliffs and the winding river below.

1. An Unforgettable Hiking Experience

During our hike, we ventured to several viewpoints, each offering unique perspectives of the canyon’s beauty. One spot in particular, known as "The Eagle’s Nest," provided a panoramic view that left us in awe. We stood there, feeling the fresh breeze on our faces and the thrill of nature’s artistry all around us.

As we explored, we learned that Fjaðrárgljúfur gained fame as a filming location for several movies and music videos, including Justin Bieber's “I-Will-Show-You.” This fun fact made our visit even more special, as we imagined the scenes captured in this incredible setting.

2. Nearby Attractions

After our unforgettable hike, we decided to explore some nearby attractions. One highlight was Svartifoss, a stunning waterfall located within Vatnajökull National Park, just a short drive from Fjaðrárgljúfur. The unique basalt columns framing the waterfall are a photographer’s dream!

Svartifoss is open year-round, and the hike to the waterfall takes about 30 minutes from the park’s visitor center. The entrance fee for the park is 1,000 ISK per person, but the breathtaking views and the natural beauty are worth every króna.

3. Comfortable Stay at Hotel Fjaðrárgljúfur

For our accommodation, we chose to stay at Hotel Fjaðrárgljúfur, conveniently located just a short drive from the canyon. This charming hotel offers cozy rooms with stunning views of the surrounding landscapes. Prices start at around 15,000 ISK per night, providing a comfortable and relaxing base for our adventures.

The hotel also has an on-site restaurant, where we enjoyed delicious Icelandic cuisine, including freshly caught fish and hearty lamb dishes. After a day of hiking, it was the perfect way to unwind and reflect on our incredible experiences.
