Hey, Lykkers! Ever imagined standing atop a historic lighthouse overlooking dramatic cliffs and the vast Baltic Sea?
We recently did just that at Cape Arkona, an incredible spot on Germany’s Rügen Island, and we’re thrilled to share our discoveries with you.
Cape Arkona actually boasts two lighthouses, making it a truly unique spot for history and nature lovers alike. The Schinkelturm Lighthouse, built in 1826, is the older of the two and showcases classic architecture from the Prussian period. Climbing to the top, we are greeted with breathtaking views of the Baltic Sea and the surrounding coast—a truly rewarding sight after the ascent.
Just a few steps away is the New Lighthouse, which has been guiding ships since 1902. Slightly taller than Schinkelturm, this lighthouse offers another stunning vantage point for those eager to capture the landscape from all angles.
Opening Hours: Both lighthouses are open to visitors daily from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Ticket Price: Admission is about 3 EUR ($3.20 USD) per person, with a discount available for students and children.
After exploring the lighthouses, we made our way to the Königstreppe, or “King’s Staircase.” This staircase descends from Cape Arkona’s cliffs down to the shores below, and the descent is as scenic as it is thrilling. With every step down, we’re treated to panoramic views of the cliffs, wildflowers, and even glimpses of seabirds soaring in the distance.
The staircase takes us directly to a quiet stretch of beach, where we can take in the sound of the waves and enjoy the serenity of the coast. A pro tip: wear comfortable shoes, as the descent can be a little steep, but the effort is entirely worth it!
To make the most of your Cape Arkona adventure, be prepared for a bit of a walk. There’s a parking area nearby, but the lighthouses are located about a mile from the main lot, accessible via a scenic walking path or a local shuttle service. Comfortable shoes and a light jacket are highly recommended, as coastal winds can be brisk. Additionally, the area around Cape Arkona offers several cafes and small restaurants, so you’ll have plenty of options for a quick bite after your climb.
Our time at Cape Arkona has been nothing short of magical. Between the historic lighthouses, stunning natural landscapes, and peaceful seaside atmosphere, this location has given us memories we’ll cherish for a lifetime. Whether you’re looking to capture the perfect view from atop a lighthouse or simply relax on the Baltic coast, Cape Arkona is a destination you won’t want to miss.
