Layout and Dimensions
The football pitch is rectangular, approximately 105x60m. The longer sides are called "touchlines," while the shorter ones are "goal lines." Each goal is positioned at the center of the goal lines, and flags mark the four corners.
Key Areas
Goal Area: A smaller rectangle in front of the goal, where goal kicks and free kicks are taken.
Penalty Area: A larger rectangle where the goalkeeper can handle the ball and penalty kicks are awarded for defensive fouls.
Penalty Arc: Located at the top of the penalty area, this semicircle is off-limits during penalty kicks, except for the kicker and defending goalkeeper.
Halfway Line and Center Circle
The pitch is divided into two halves by the "halfway line." Kick-offs start at the "center mark," surrounded by a 10-yard "center circle," which keeps opposing players at a distance during kick-off.
Each team has 11 players on the pitch, with substitutes on the sidelines. The main positions are:
Goalkeepers
The only players allowed to use their hands, their primary role is to prevent the opposition from scoring by defending the goal.
Defenders
Positioned to block the opposing team's attacks, they are often the last line of defense before the goalkeeper.
Midfielders
These versatile players support both defense and offense, helping defend, pass the ball, and create scoring opportunities.
Forwards
Also called "strikers," their main role is to score goals. They often take penalty kicks, corner kicks, and the kick-off at the start of each half.
Standard Duration
A football game lasts 90 minutes, split into two 45-minute halves, with a 15-minute halftime break.
Extra Time and Added Time
If a knockout match ends in a draw, extra time of 30 minutes, divided into two 15-minute halves, is played. If no winner emerges, the game proceeds to a penalty shoot-out. Added time compensates for stoppages, extending the match without it being considered extra time.
Dear Lykkers, during penalty shoot-outs, teams alternate shots at the goal from the penalty mark, with only the goalkeeper defending. Each team gets five shots, taken by different players, until one team gains an unassailable lead. Goals scored in a shoot-out do not count toward the match’s final score.
This rule ensures fair play and prevents players from gaining an unfair advantage. A player is off-side if:
- They are in the opponent's half of the pitch.
- They are positioned behind the last outfield player (not the goalkeeper) when the ball is passed forward to them.
Exceptions
- A player is not off-side if level with the last defender or if the ball is passed backward.
- The rule applies only during active play.
With these basics, understanding and enjoying football becomes much easier. From its strategic gameplay to the thrilling moments on the pitch, football truly is a game for everyone!
